Senior Living in the Harbor

An unparalleled lifestyle

By Rachel Kelly

Gig Harbor is the perfect place to settle down. From downtown waterfront concerts, historical downtown walks and shopping and dining accessibility, there is no shortage of things to do. It is no surprise that Gig Harbor supports a wide variety of senior living options: 55+ communities, independent living, assisted living, hospice care and continuing care.

There are eight 55+ active living communities in Gig Harbor. Affordable, single-story, easy-to-maintain lots with access to various outdoor amenities are available in communities ranging from the Hillcrest mobile park to Laurelwood Senior Apartments.

Independent living provides a minimal amount of support while keeping privacy intact. These apartments are rentable and include a vibrant community, and range from affordable to luxury options. Generally included are organized activities, classes, rides, and minimal health care; allowing for ownership while not sacrificing community engagement. One example is The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing.

There are eight assisted living communities in Gig Harbor for individuals in need of further care including extensive meal plans, housekeeping, daily check-ins, diabetic care and oversight of medications. These homes host community activities, encouraging activity and independence, while providing for specialized needs. Options include the more affordable Mercycare Adult Family Home, and the more comprehensive Village Concepts of Gig Harbor - Sound Vista Village.

There are five homes in the larger community that provide 24-hour care for a variety of medical issues associated with age, including hospice. Two of these specialize in memory care. These homes and facilities are for individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves, with loved ones who cannot provide full-time care. These include the smaller and more personable and attentive Family First Adult Family Homes—providing care solutions that specialize in dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke, diabetes, special diets and hospice care—to the larger Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence.

Lastly, several continuing care communities are options as well. These communities are meant to be neighborhoods that support seniors from age 55 until the end of their lives. Continuing care communities provide the variety of services meant for independent active living, while also providing for the services that seniors may need as they age. You will find a diverse group of people of all ages in these communities, as well as a variety of experiences. These include, but are not limited to, Heron’s Key, Kensington Gardens, and Harbor Place at Cottesmore. Harbor Place at Cottesmore offers independent retirement and assisted living, with an on-site salon, spa, fitness center and restaurant-like dining, while its sister community Cottesmore of Life Care offers 24-hr skilled nursing and inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services.

Retirement and senior living in Gig Harbor has many options to explore, and the best part is everyone can make it their own and find that perfect fit.
